More than a Band

WHY BAND

Joining a band in high school offers a unique opportunity develop musical skills while fostering teamwork and discipline, a chance to express creativity, build lasting friendships, and enhance your confidence through performances. Additionally, being part of a band can improve time management and provide a sense of belonging within the school community. Embrace the joy of music and the invaluable experiences that come with being in a high school band!

APPLICATION PROCESS

HOW TO APPLY

SUBMIT THE MAGNET APPLICATION

Complete the DCSS Magnet Application online. See Key Dates above for this cycle's open and close dates. Contact Ms. Ashley Cleveland, FAME Magnet Director, with any program or eligibility questions.

REQUEST TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Ask your math, science, English, and foreign language teachers to complete a recommendation form. Share the DCSS Magnet Teacher Recommendation Form link with them directly.

PREPARE YOUR AUDITION MATERIALS

The FAME Band audition measures your current skill level and determines ensemble placement. Download your instrument's materials below — and come ready to play your best.

ATTEND YOUR AUDITION

You'll be evaluated by Mr. Lebarron N. McWhorter, Director of Bands. Results are mailed home from the FAME Magnet Office after all auditions are complete.

WHAT TO PREPARE

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Major Scales (Concert Scales): Quarter Note-8th Note Pattern and Arpeggio

    • F, Bb, Eb, Ab 

    • Level I: One Octave

    • Level II: Two Octave where applicable 

  • Chromatic scale

    • Level I: one octave; ranged for your instrument

    • Level II: two octaves; ranged for your instrument

  • Sight Reading (Required)

  • Etude (Level II scoring)

    • Must be a published etude or a excerpt from a concert work that showcases your musical ability. Marching/Pep band music is not an acceptable etude performance. 

    • GMEA All-State etudes are acceptable.

  • Auditions determine your level score. Level score determines your band placement.

Here are scale sheets and etudes that you may use to prepare for your FAME Band audition. You may bring your own etude/solo if you so desire. Etudes DO NOT have to be memorized.
 

The etudes posted below have two etudes of contrasting styles. Please choose only one etude for your FAME audition. It does not matter which etude you choose.
